Action photography is about capturing the energy and thrill of a moment in a split-second. Photographers use special techniques to freeze the action. Whether it’s a bird flying, a cyclist in mid-air, a dancer spinning, or a an athlete staving off a challenger to win a race, the aim is to make images that feel full of movement and excitement and capture the imagination of the viewer.
Sports photography is about capturing the excitement and emotion of sporting events. Sports photography refers to any photos taken of sports and/or athletes. Sports photography could involve action shots as well as team shots, athlete portraits, behind-the-scenes looks, marketing and promotional photos, and pretty much any photo related to some type of sport. It goes well beyond just taking pictures of the gameโit tells stories about the athletes, the fans, and the culture around sports. In Australia, for example, Cathy Freemanโs unforgettable 400m win at the Sydney Olympics is more than just a race; itโs a symbol of national pride and identity. From local footy games to world-class surfing events, sports photography shows the energy, passion, and spirit that connect people through sport.
I am relatively new to this genre of photography, but I think I will be taking every chance I can get to improve the skills necessary to make my images something to be proud of.
Here is a selection of my images that fall within this genre.
